The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
