The English and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
